Sustainable Cotton Value Chain Project
The 'Sustainable Cotton Value Chain' project, launched in January 2021 in collaboration with the European Bank for Investment and Development (EBRD) and scheduled to conclude in December 2021, aims to strengthen and expand the implementation of Better Cotton Standard practices in Türkiye.
The project targets farmers producing according to the Better Cotton standard, implementation partners who play important roles in this process, their agricultural engineers, and ginning plants that process Better Cotton, and the activities will be carried out under six main headings:
1- Pilot studies will be conducted on a total of four plots of land regarding fertilization based on soil analysis results, reducing pesticide use through trap planting, monitoring soil moisture and optimizing irrigation amounts, and the correct application of harvest-aiding chemicals. These pilot plots will be supported by innovative and smart farming methods such as climate stations and early warning systems.
2. Technical training materials on sustainable cotton production will be prepared for farmers participating in the Better Cotton system.
3- Agricultural engineers from our partner companies that provide technical support to farmers will be trained in sustainable cotton production.
4- Local Better Cotton practice partners will be technically supported in mapping natural resources (water, soil, biodiversity) and designing a continuous improvement plan.
5-Good cotton ginning plants will be trained on fiber quality, occupational health and safety, traceability, and process management, and a total of ten ginning plants will receive one-on-one technical support and consultancy.
6. An information technology research study will be conducted on digital solutions for data collection and mapping in the field.
